2022 Galicia to Lanzarote

September 5th to September 28th

Galicia to Lanzarote seems a lot for one page. But, with the exception of the week in Madeira, this was about getting the boat back to Canaries before the end of September. Firstly there is a greater possibility of bad weather from early October onwards. Secondly, there is 'business' which the skipper must attend to in October. Thankfully, Skyfall is now safely berthed, awaiting the transatlantic crossing which should start mid-November.

The sail from Galicia to Madeira was described in a blog post. However, the stay in Lisbon, to pick up Sean and show him around, was not mentioned. This year we chose Cascais marina (instead of Oeiras). It is further out from Lisbon centre, upmarket, a lovely holiday resort close to Sintra - but very expensive (80 euros/night). Check out the video of the beach volleyball below.

Our week in Madeira with Ellen and her friend, Lotte, was a great success. My brother-in-law, Chris, had recommended Madeira and we can only concur. Funchal is nicely done, with a mixture of polished, 'cruise liner attractions', coupled with areas of more character, with a real 'earthy' feel. The 'lido' or salt water swimming pool in Port Moniz (rated as the best lido in the world by CNN) was a definite highlight. Add to that the opportunity for nature and hiking, 'big game' fishing and a week was almost not enough. Away from the cruise liner watering holes the food and drink were great value - probably half the price of northern Europe. Arguably there is also the CR7 museum but, judging by the laughable quality of the statue outside, we decided it was not worth visiting.

However, a rental car, a head for heights and confident driving were all essential to make the most of the island.

The sail from Madeira to Lanzarote was fast and uneventful. Reaching in 15-20 knots of wind allowed us to complete the 280nm in a day and a half. The final comment relates to Rubicon Marina, Lanzarote. We loved it last year and it was great value. However, in this post covid era, they have doubled prices, charging 50% more than they quote on their own website! Lesson: book marinas a long time in advance.
