Books
These are the books which we have used heavily so far. We will expand this list as we use different books for new cruising areas.
Actually Jimmy Cornell's book features recommended cruising guides for each area
How to sail around the world
Hal Roth
ISBN-10 : 0071429514
Motivational. Gives you clear advice and makes you believe you can do it. Perhaps his solutions are a little dated but still a good read.
Slocum was the first to sail alone around the world. it is the book which visitors, only staying a couple of weeks, tend to pick up and then not put down until they have finished it. How he recounts his dead reckoning, his reading of the skies, puts us modern sailors with chart plotters to shame
World Cruising Routes
Jimmy Cornell
ISBN: 9781472993083
Simply a 'bible'. Tells you when to attempt to cross each ocean, with what landfalls, etc. Also recommends cruising guides for each area
The Cruising Guide to the Windward Islands
Chris Doyle
ISBN 978-1-7333053-6-5
Most of the recommended guides in the Caribbean are from Chris Doyle. The sketches and soundings of each anchorage are really accurate and helpful. His info on restaurants, cafes, shops less so as it is impossible to keep up to date
The Cruising Guide to the Northern Leeward Islands
Chris Doyle
ISBN 9781733305303
Most of the recommended guides in the Caribbean are from Chris Doyle. see above
The Cruising Guide to the Southern Leeward Islands
Chris Doyle
ISBN ISBN 978-1-7333053-1-0
Most of the recommended guides in the Caribbean are from Chris Doyle. see above
Essential for sailing the San Blas. His charts are the only (relatively) accurate ones there are. And available for OpenCPN too
Actually, we have the 2006 edition. The 3rd edition was updated in 2016. Excellent guide and aid to planning the crossing. But you still need local pilot guides!
We found this in the chandlery in Nuku Hiva. There is a paper version (sold) or an electronic version given away for free if you make a purchase. They are old but extremely detailed with good info on nice anchorages etc. We used them for Tuamotus especially.
Information was complimented by what is available on www.svsoggypaws.com (tuomotus compendium)
The Wrong Direction for Smuggling and other stories
Fernie, Peter
Sold by: Amazon EU S.a.r.L.
We met Peter Fernie and his son in Galicia. His boat, Mystic of Hamble, is old and well travelled ( a bit like its owner!). This book brings together short stories published in various sailing publications over the last 30 years. Humerous and well written. Worth a read
